Mental Health Treatment for Teens: Why Choose Us?

Being a teen isn’t easy. Adolescence is a time of profound transformation – physically, emotionally and socially, and your child may feel like they don’t fit in or that no one understands them. They may be experiencing mood swings and withdrawal, while also dealing with social media pressures, test-taking anxiety or even bullying. No matter what your child is facing, we can help.

The adolescent psychiatric programs at BHC Alhambra Hospital help teens ages 13 to 17 manage mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, ADHD and trauma. We offer inpatient and outpatient programs tailored to your child’s needs.

For over 100 years, BHC Alhambra Hospital has been a beacon in the L.A. mental health community, offering hope and recovery for teens and their families. Our staff is trained to take a trauma-informed approach and provide an empathetic, nonjudgmental environment for your child to heal and gain the tools needed to live a happy life.

At BHC Alhambra Hospital, you’ll find:

  • Skilled care providers: Your child’s providers include therapists, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, medical doctor and clinical case manager. They work together to create a comprehensive care plan for your child.
  • Individualized treatment: Every child is different. We assess your child and customize treatment to their needs.
  • Structured environment: Your child attends individual and group therapy sessions, process groups and psychoeducational groups. A structured schedule helps them focus on healing.
  • Family involvement: Family therapy enables you to participate in your child’s recovery. We also offer visiting hours every evening for children in the inpatient program.
  • Transition of care: We help you create an after-care plan for your child so they can transition back to their life.
  • Virtual programming: Our adolescent outpatient programs are available in person or virtually. Your child can attend via teleconference so they feel part of the group.

Our Adolescent Psychiatric Programs

We offer inpatient and outpatient treatment for teens. Our programs include:

Inpatient program

Our inpatient treatment provides acute care for adolescents experiencing a mental health crisis. Whether they are dealing with severe depression, anxiety, PTSD or psychotic disorders, our inpatient unit allows your child to stabilize and recover in a compassionate environment.

We provide around-the-clock care and a structured environment to help them heal. Your child attends individual and group therapy and gains the tools they need to recover. Learn more about our adolescent inpatient program.

Partial hospitalization program (PHP)

Designed for young people requiring the highest level of outpatient treatment, this program offers structured support without a hospital stay. Your child may step down to PHP after inpatient care or admit directly to PHP if they don’t need a hospital stay.

The program meets Monday through Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. Your child can attend in person or virtually. Learn more about our adolescent partial hospitalization program.

Intensive outpatient program (IOP)

Adolescents thrive in environments where they feel safe, seen and supported. The IOP is built around this principle. Your child may step down to IOP after completing a hospital stay or PHP,  or they may admit directly to IOP after being referred by their provider. Our IOP for teens provides structured support 3 – 5  days a week, while not interfering with school. You and your child choose the days that work best for them.

The program meets from 6 to 9 p.m. and is available in person or virtually. Learn more about our adolescent intensive outpatient program.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): Also known as talk therapy or psychotherapy, this type of therapy helps your child identify and change negative thought patterns. It also teaches them how to respond to and overcome challenges.
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): Teens learn how to accept the reality of their life, manage their emotions and change behaviors that aren’t serving them.
  • Family therapy: You and your child meet with a therapist to learn how to improve your communication and handle conflict in healthy ways.
  • Activity-based therapy: Your teen participates in various recreational activities, such as games and art projects, to help them learn social skills and healthy expression.
